The honest part

Where remove.bg is still the better choice

APIs and automation. remove.bg's API moves to Leonardo.Ai (also a Canva company) when the standalone site closes on 1 December 2026 — if you're wiring background removal into a pipeline, check that route before building on it. Ours is a hands-on browser tool.
The hardest edges. Their server-side models sometimes beat an on-device model on very wispy hair and fur. Ours is honest about that: most subjects come out clean, but fine hair can be imperfect.
Instant results on any machine. Cloud processing doesn't care how old your laptop is. Ours runs on your CPU — expect a few seconds per image, plus a one-time model download (~43 MB) on first use. That's the price of true privacy.
Full editing suites. Photoroom and Adobe Express bundle templates, retouching and resizing around the cutout. Ours does one job well and hands you the PNG.

Is my image uploaded to a server?
Never — that's the whole point of this tool. The AI cutout model runs 100% in your browser, on your device, so your photo never touches a server. remove.bg and Photoroom work the other way: your file uploads to their cloud for processing. Is the background remover really free?
Yes — no signup, no watermark, batch as much as you like. The disclosed limits: downloading needs a free account (every cutout at full size, no daily limit), and the ZIP of them all and bulk edit are Pro — it is $35/mo or $280/yr across the whole Studio-Tools suite. See tools pricing.
Why is there a one-time download the first time I use it?
Because the AI model has to live on your device to keep your images off ours. The first run fetches the model once — about 179 MB on the default Best-quality setting, or about 43 MB on Faster — then caches it in your browser, so later sessions start straight away.
Is the cutout quality as good as remove.bg?
Honest answer: usually close, not always. It's strongest on product shots, people and everyday subjects with a clear subject-background separation; very wispy hair or fur can come out imperfect, and remove.bg's server-side models sometimes win on those hard edges. It's also not instant — the model runs on your CPU, so allow a few seconds per image. Since ours is free with no signup, the sensible move is to try your actual images first and pay only if you need to.
Do I get a transparent PNG or a solid colour behind the subject?
Both are options. Take the clean transparent-PNG cutout for layouts and banners, or composite the subject straight onto a solid colour for marketplace listings and quick social cards. Drop in a folder of images or a .zip and process the whole batch, then download one by one or as one ZIP.
Do these tools use credits or tokens?
