Social video safe zones: most of your Reel is not yours

The platform draws its own interface over your ad — a profile row, a caption, an action rail, a CTA. On Meta Reels, by Meta's own published margins, that takes 59% of the frame. Here are the reserved margins for six placements in actual pixels, why they differ, and what it does to a composition you have to ship in four shapes.

1. The short answer, in pixels

Every social placement reserves part of the frame for its own interface. Your video still fills the whole thing — but anything that has to be read, a headline, a logo, a price, a legal line, has to live inside what is left. These are the margins our tools design against — taken from the platforms’ own published guidance where they publish it (Meta’s ads guide, TikTok’s spec page) and from settled convention where they do not.

Margins are fractions of the frame: top and bottom of the height, left and right of the width. “Unsafe” is the share of frame area outside the safe box. Rounded to whole pixels.

2. Most of a Reel is interface

The number worth sitting with is the first row. A Meta Reel is a 1080×1920 frame, and once you subtract the profile row at the top, the caption, audio tag and CTA at the bottom, and the column of action icons down the right, the box you can safely put a headline in is 864×979. That is 59% of the frame area gone — the safe box is barely more than a square, floating in the upper half of a tall frame.

It is not evenly gone, either. The bottom takes 672px and the right takes 151px, while the left gives up only 65px. The usable area is pushed up and to the left. A logo dropped in the bottom-right corner, which is where a logo goes in almost every other medium, lands underneath both the CTA and the action rail.

This is why “centre everything” is such common advice for vertical video, and also why it produces such bland work. Centring is a way of avoiding the problem rather than solving it. The safe box has a shape, and it is worth composing to that shape deliberately.

3. Why the numbers differ

The margins are not arbitrary and they are not the same across platforms. Each one is reserving space for a specific piece of its own interface:

  • Meta Reels & Stories — profile row on top, caption and CTA at the bottom, action icons down the right. The widest reservations of any placement here.
  • TikTok in-feed — the username and caption sit low, and the action rail runs up the right edge. Hence 22% off the bottom and 16% off the right.
  • YouTube Shorts — title and channel row at the bottom, actions on the right. Similar in shape to TikTok, slightly less severe.
  • YouTube Bumper — six seconds, unskippable. Little chrome except the player controls, which eat the bottom strip.
  • Meta Feed — much less chrome over the frame, but the reaction row and caption still sit under it: 10% off the bottom of a square, 8% of a 4:5.
  • LinkedIn Feed — light chrome, and a slightly deeper bottom reservation than Meta’s for its reactions row.

Notice that two placements at the same aspect ratio can have different safe areas. Meta Feed and LinkedIn Feed both take 1:1, but the reserved bottom is 108px in one and 130px in the other. And the three vertical placements — all 1080×1920 — run from 36% unsafe to 59%. Aspect ratio tells you the shape of the canvas; it tells you nothing about where you may put words on it.

4. What it does to a composition

The practical consequence is that a social video set is not one video exported at several sizes. It is one story, re-composed per placement — and the re-composition is driven as much by the safe areas as by the crop.

Take a single 15-second cut you need in 9:16 for Reels and 16:9 for YouTube. The crop problem is obvious: a vertical frame carries a fraction of the horizontal information, so the subject has to be re-framed rather than letterboxed if it is going to read. The safe-area problem is the one people discover late:

  • A headline sitting at 80% height clears the UI comfortably in 16:9, where 12% of the bottom is reserved. In a Reel the bottom 35% is spoken for, so 80% height is well inside it — underneath the caption.
  • A logo pinned to the right edge is fine in feed placements and buried under the action rail in Reels, TikTok and Shorts.
  • Captions burned along the bottom — the single most common choice, because sound-off viewing demands them — are exactly where every vertical placement puts its own text.

None of that is solvable by scaling. Each output needs its own position for the copy, which is why our editor keeps framing and element position per format rather than sharing one layout across all of them. The same reasoning applies to display banners for a different reason — there the driver is a 54-fold span of aspect ratio, which we worked through in banner sizes that actually get trafficked.

5. Duration is the other constraint

Safe areas govern where the message goes; duration governs how much of it there is room for. These are the lengths our editor’s pre-flight checks a cut against — a warning past the first column, a hard stop past the second:

These are not the platforms’ own maximums, and they are shorter on purpose. LinkedIn will accept a video up to thirty minutes; our pre-flight stops at thirty seconds, because a feed ad that runs longer is a different kind of asset and almost never performs as one. Where you need the platform’s actual accepted ceilings, take them from our ad specs cheat sheet, which lists them per platform — not from this table.

The gap between the two columns is where most of the waste lives. Meta Feed will take four minutes; almost nothing benefits from it. The bumper is the honest one — six seconds, unskippable, nothing to argue with, which forces a single idea and usually produces a better ad than the placement that lets you ramble.

6. Designing against it

A few rules that follow directly from the table:

  • Pick the placement before you position anything. The safe box for Reels and the safe box for Meta Feed differ by more than a third of the frame. Copy positioned first and assigned to a placement afterwards will be wrong for one of them.
  • Design for the worst case, then relax. If the same asset has to serve Reels and Feed, compose inside the Reels box — 864×979 — and it survives everywhere. You lose space in Feed; you lose the message entirely in Reels otherwise.
  • Treat the right edge as gone on vertical. Reels and Shorts reserve 14% of the width on the right, TikTok 11%. Nothing legible belongs there.
  • Move captions up. Burned-in captions are close to mandatory for sound-off viewing, and the default position — pinned to the bottom — is the single worst place on every vertical placement. On Reels the bottom 672px is spoken for; lift them clear of it.
  • Check at delivery size, not in the editor. A 40% zoomed preview flatters everything. The margins in the table are the real pixels at 1080×1920.

7. The honest caveat

Where a platform publishes its own numbers we use those, and cite them — Meta’s ads guide for Reels and Stories, TikTok’s spec page for in-feed. Where none is published the figure is settled convention rather than a source, and we say so rather than dressing it up. Either way: these are guidance, not a contract. Every platform moves its own interface around, and these are the zones their design kits have reserved for long enough to be worth designing against — not a guarantee about what next month's app build will draw. Before a large buy, check them against the platform's current design kit. Our editor says the same thing on screen, in the same words, for the same reason.

One more thing worth stating plainly, because some tools get it wrong: the shaded safe-area overlay is a preview aid. It is drawn on the editing canvas and never burned into the exported file. If you can see the guides in your rendered MP4, that master is unusable — re-export it.
